Historical Development of Guidance

Guidance is an emerging , growing and continually changing concept and movement with American roots. Counselling and guidance services began in the United States of America as vocational guidance , around the turn of the 20 -th century.

Conditions that Led to the Rise of Guidance .

  1. Division of labour.
  2. Growth of technology.
  3. Extension of vocational education.
  4. Spread of modern forms of democracy.

The guidance movement emerged as a natural consequence of the type of conditions existing at that time.

The early 1900’s were characterized by urbanization ,immigration, industrialization and social evolution.

The development of industrialization led to the division of labour.

The need for specialization contributed to the rise in unemployment and to massive changes in the pattern of American life.

Other developments included; concern over child labour , compulsory school attendance,and changing role of women.
